There are a lot of things that happen in other countries that we, as Americans, have the LUXURY to get offended by. It was worth reflecting that cockfighting is actually a good money-making business. When you drive by little stands along the road where families are selling soup or food for pisos, and you know that's how they make a living, a lot of things fall into perpective. When the older woman was collecting wood scraps, I happened to turn around and look right at her. I was trying to figure out what she was doing, and she responded by acting ashamed and "caught". I felt terrible, and smiled at her and helped her pick up the ones I found in my work area. The rest of the day, I started piling scraps for her. I can't imagine feeling like you might get in trouble for doing something that helps care for your family. We hire a lot of locals to do a lot of things around the base - laundry, guard duty, driving, etc. Who are we to criticise what someone else must do to feed their family? Thanks for reading - I wish I had the time to write more about it!
